My Plate vs. School Lunch Trays

My Plate vs. School Lunch Trays

So as many of you know, I'm in Foods I. We have been talking a lot about this new thing Michelle Obama started called My Plate to encourage healthy eating. I'll paste a picture of it for you to see-

So as you can see, protein (which is generally our main course) is supposed to take up less than 25% of your plate. This got me thinking though, what about our school lunch trays? They look something like this-

What happened to healthy eating? The main course (the middle "hole") takes up much more than what it should, according to My Plate.

Anyways, this could be partially where childhood obesity comes from. Our very own schools. Thoughts?

  1. In American culture, the main course is generally meat or protein based. Unless you get a salad, you are having mostly meats or cheeses or starches or something NOT PLANT-BASED. I want to know why fruits and vegetables are considered different! I'll eat any fruit but not most vegetables. They can both get the job done of providing fiber and vitamins. Fruits just have more sugar. I think our school's food (standard issue) is relatively healthy and relatively mediocre-tasting, although I haven't had it in years. However, if they wanted to truly curb obesity they would fund the program more. There are probably more important usages of the government's time and resources than making kids less fat. It's their choice to eat poorly, and besides, exercise is just as important. BUT high-schoolers don't have "recess" or Phy Ed after 10th grade. Should that be mandatory? I also think no but we should all try to move around a little more.
    That's all.
