Abortion

Abortion

I'm on a homework craze tonight and figured I would crank two posts out (and a few comments).

My dad and I were driving tonight and I asked him a few things about politics. Abortion came up.

I guess that all I wanted to say is that I don't see the point of limiting people's freedoms because your religion says so. I personally don't know how I feel about the subject but from a logical stand point. The United States' official religion isn't Christianity (and primarily Catholicism). I bring this up because the majority of representatives that oppose abortion are Christians (and Catholic). If my religion doesn't believe that it's a sin to have an abortion, and I want one, I can go get one. Unless, a law is passed prohibiting abortion because your religion says it's wrong.

Seems like a no brainer to me.

  1. Respectfully, Dube, I disagree!
The reasoning you're explaining, I personally feel applies well to topics such as gay marraige. However, when it comes to abortion, I feel it's more than religious freedoms that come into play. It's protecting life, which I feel the government has a responsibility to do. I see it the same way as making murder illegal - is it okay for the government to allow people to kill each other? No. I understand the debate over whether or not a fetus is considered "life" is controversial and up in the open, however I feel this issue is more scientific/logical than religious in this regard, even if sentiments tend to fall on religious lines. I'm not trying to start a debate or anything, just expressing a different point of view and arguing that the knowledge issue is less religious than you're saying!

  2. What I'm not sure about is when life technically begins. This is the overall knowledge issue.

I think that what makes us different from all other animals is that we have a soul (well, I suppose other animals could have souls but we'll ignore that). I have always assumed that by saying life begins at conception, God put a soul into that baby. I guess the cells are technically living, but they're dependent upon their mother. Plus, scientists kill living cells everyday.

I dunno. I don't really know if this issue belongs in politics.

    Life is a relative thing.
